Other Services

Christmas Food Baskets & Toys

We distribute Winter Baskets just before the Christmas holiday so families will have enough food to have a meal. We also have a toy drive so each child in the house we distribute the basket to has an appropriate gift.

Utilities and Winter Fuel

We assist with utility bills for those who are in danger of losing their electric, gas, or water service. We can also assist with refillable fuel such as propane, wood, fuel oil, or coal, depending on available funding. Decatur Human Services has a $200 cash assistance limit per family in any given 12-month period, but we can coordinate assistance with the Department of Human Services, the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency, Salvation Army, the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo, and the Federal Refillable Fuel Assistance program. We are the coordinators for the last two funding sources for residents of all of Van Buren County, not just the Decatur area.

Decatur Human Services provides gasoline vouchers to enable individuals to get to infrequent events such as medical appointments, court appearances, job interviews, and contacts with the Department of Human Services. The amount varies from $10 to $20 depending on distance.

Emergency assistance can be provided to help cover the cost of medications. This assistance is for short-term needs only and cannot be used on a continuing basis.

Housing Emergencies

We can attempt to help in cases of imminent eviction from rental quarters, depending upon the situation. However, we cannot pay deposits for rental housing.

We work closely with other agencies to ensure that the people we serve are aware of other sources of assistance for needs that we cannot meet.

We are open to providing assistance in other areas, such as online access to the Department of Human Services as well as Michigan Works and other employment resources, to the extent of our ability.
